About Monroe Place
Placed on the National Register of Historic Place in 2015.
Monroe Elementary was built in 1961 using mid-century linear design. The school is awash in color with an original mural and ceramic tile lining the building’s corridors. Original wood doors and unique wood cubbies line the corridors. The use of glazing, deep overhangs and exposed beams and trusses are visibly appealing. The windows with their alternating light configurations remain intact throughout the building. Rehabilitation and preservation was led by a talented team. ASK Studio, a leader in Iowa historic preservation projects, converted the classroom space into 19 apartment units without subdivision of the historic space. The general contractor, Woodruff Construction, a partner in the project, built 13 two bedroom, 3 three bedroom, and 3 four bedroom units. Unique loft units were built in the two story gymnasium, boiler room and cafeteria areas.
